nobody tells you what a shock it’s going to be to be in a healthy relationship after all you’ve known is abuse. how it’s going to become clear to you that there are so many harmful things you’ll start to unlearn when you’re with someone who treats you right. how you’re going to be surprised when this person tells you that you don’t have to apologize for everything. how this person is going to respect your boundaries and care about your well-being more than their pleasure and not make you feel like you’re obligated to give them sex whenever they want it. how sometimes they’re going to do things that are the bare minimum of human decency but it’s going to mean so much to you because other people you were with wouldn’t do those things. how this person is the total opposite of the abusive people you’ve been with. how you can learn to trust someone again and not constantly fear that they’re going to hurt you. how it feels to actually be respected. how surprised you might feel to realize you can actually be in a healthy relationship. i could go on, there are so many things to list that are new to me but i don’t have the energy to list them all. anyway it’s amazing and i could never take it for granted.
and if you’re reading this and it hasn’t happened to you yet, i promise that it can. you are capable of being in a healthy relationship (assuming relationships are something you want) and i hope it happens for all of you someday, and i have faith that it will. in the mean time just know that it can happen and you deserve it but you can be okay on your own too. it just takes time. i promise you’ll get there.
